NJTIP is hosting a symposium in conjunction with the Searle Center on Law, Regulation and Economic Growth at Northwestern Law School on February 23 and 24, 2012. The theme for our 2012 Symposium is "Beyond IP: How Intellectual Property and Technology Influence Other Areas of Law." The topics for our panels are: Climate Change and Clean Technology Incentivization; Technology and Government Surveillance in the Post-9/11 World; and Copyright and the Future of the Entertainment Industry. The Symposium will also include an opening address discussing the effects of the new America Invents Act, as well as a Keynote Luncheon discussing international compulsory licensing of pharmaceutical patents.

   Dr. Stuart Graham, the Chief Economist of the USPTO, will discuss the new Leahy-Smith America Invents Act and the effects that patent law has on the economy, business growth and entrepreneurship and high-tech startups.

Friday, February 24th

   Panelists will discuss the growing issue of the importance of climate change mitigation through the lens of how best to incentivize the dissemination and growth of green and clean technologies.

   This panel explores recent issues revolving around advancing technology and copyright's role in disseminating information to consumers. The panel will also explore the effects of recent legislation, including the recent SOPA/PIPA debate.

Professor Jerome Reichman will address the attendees of the Symposium, speaking on the current international intellectual property rights issues surrounding access to pharmaceuticals in developing countries.

2:00pm - 3:20pm    Technology, Government Surveillance, and the Fourth Amendment : Lincoln Hall
   Panelists will discuss how technology is affecting privacy in society focusing on the shrinking private sphere and the Fourth Amendment's role in modern society, informed by the recent Supreme Court case of U.S. v. Jones
